Ever since we completed the patio makeover at our first home I’ve wanted a spot to serve food outdoors. It’s funny, because here we are 3 years down the road, and I’ve created a DIY Outdoor Serving Bar from a piece of furniture that we’ve owned this entire time.

It’s a basic, inexpensive breakfast table. You’ve probably seen many similar versions in big box stores or at yard sales over the years — maybe you even own one already.

See? It’s a pretty simple table. Nothing special… but it’s functional. We’ve used this table as storage and as a coffee bar over the years. It has been that piece of furniture that really hasn’t ever had its permanent home. That is, until now.

This quaint little breakfast nook, with a nod to farmhouse style, actually came together rather quickly. It wasn’t even on my decorating radar for 2016, but then we decided to sell our home… and plans changed.

What an unexpected surprise, because we are loving this space in our home. Loving it not just for looks, but for how functional it is, as well. We typically eat breakfast in here, and sometimes lunch. It’s convenient for when the kids want a snack or if I’m drinking a coffee while working on a project.

The light pours in from the window, which makes it a great space to work. The industrial pendant light was found at a local Lexington shop called Street Scene. We’ve got a similar light hanging in our Entry Way. If I recall correctly, I believe the lights are made locally, as well.

The light’s style is a perfect contrast to the vintage, turned-leg, drop-leaf table. This table was actually my grandparents at one point and my mom has given it to me {on loan} in order to stage our home for selling.

In typical farmhouse style, the chairs don’t match. The black in the traditional Windsor-style chairs is repeated in the wall decor. I hung a wooden growth chart on the wall which is both functional and decorative art. It has already been used as a fun photo prop, which I’ll be sharing soon.

The other side of the window is an Instagram photo display that I created from a vintage yardstick. Sometimes decor magazines and experts give us the impression that family photos aren’t curated enough for our walls. Instead, I believe that there is no reason not to display family photos in your home. In fact, are we creating a home if our family isn’t shared in the decor?

The curtains are from a flea market in Lexington. I love them and their vintage floral goodness. They will be going with us to our next home. I’ve literally looked forward to the day when they would be hanging up against a neutral painted wall, instead of plaid wallpaper {see the before photo in this post}. They can shine, now. Maybe I’m being dramatic about these curtains?

Maybe not.

On the other wall is both a personal favorite and a best seller in my Shop. The Initial Wreath Print features both black and gold with our family name.

Thanks to At Home, my Dining Room has received a makeover. She feels a bit more summery and colorful. I must say, I love her new look.

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by At Home, but the opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Nothing major was changed. No paint, no curtains, no flooring, no furniture, no lighting. It’s just the accessories… but what a difference it made. The space feels fresh, warm, and inviting with a loosely beach-inspired vibe.

Summer Decorating Ideas: The Table

Driftwood and a buoy-like candle anchor the center of the table, flanked by faux boxwoods. They are set atop a lace runner, which feels airy and perfect for summer.

No major changes needed… a few new accessories can change the feel of a room. #creatingahome

These graphic placemats from At Home were a great price {$7 for 4} and pair well with the lace runner, keeping the table from feeling too feminine. They’ve got an energetic and bold print, which speaks to the playfulness of summer.

Summer Decorating Ideas: The Mantel

If you’ve followed this blog long, you know that I love to mix styles. On the mantel, you’ll find the same combination… a mix of bold and modern, with beachy and organic.

The geode print is stunning. I tried to reflect that in the photos, but I’m not sure you can fully appreciate it unless you see it in person. It’s the perfect marriage of modern and earthy. The colors are bold and dramatic, yet it’s an organic item found within nature.

The chalkboard art is one of my favorite DIY art projects {you can find the tutorial here} and it’s a great backdrop to the collection on the mantel. When you are decorating a mantel, books are a great way to pull in extra height and color. The blue and white succulent planter felt small next to the green glass jar. However, once I tucked several books underneath it, there was a nice balance.

Summer Decorating Ideas: The Buffet

Check out these Summer Decorating Ideas! In this Summer Tour of my Dining Room, see how I brought beach-inspired texture and color into a neutral space. #AtHomeFinds @CraftivityD @athomestores

There is a mix of real and faux plants throughout the room, which definitely accents that beachy, nature-inspired feel. Several of our real plants set on the buffet, where they get plenty of natural sunlight.

And again, you find that mix of style and texture which I love. The center of the buffet is a bamboo tray topped with a vintage Scrabble game, marble cheese cloche, and snake plant in a pewter trophy cup.

Check out these Summer Decorating Ideas! In this Summer Tour of my Dining Room, see how I brought beach-inspired texture and color into a neutral space. #AtHomeFinds @CraftivityD @athomestores

There wasn’t enough of the beachy blue shades in this part of the room, so I stuck a bamboo plant in a feminine teapot and set a blue creamer aside my DIY succulent planter.

Check out these Summer Decorating Ideas! In this Summer Tour of my Dining Room, see how I brought beach-inspired texture and color into a neutral space. #AtHomeFinds @CraftivityD @athomestores

Everything on the buffet was already in this room, I just shifted our accessories around a bit to highlight more color. An easy way to refresh a room is to simply move accessories to a new spot.

Summer Decorating Ideas: The China Cabinet

It was from our hutch that I pulled many of the items to use around the room, but it didn’t change much, itself. Yet, it features a simple update that I absolutely love.

I stacked tablecloths that fit this summery color palette on top of the hutch. It’s a simple detail, but I like the casual, farmhouse feel of having them on display instead of tucked away. It’s another example of using items that I already own, placed in a new home.

I can’t thank At Home enough for sponsoring this summer refresh. It’s a welcome change in a room that I already loved, but that I like to switch up and reinvent. I’d imagine you are curious as to what was actually bought and not just pulled from around the house…

I intentionally chose items from At Home that were versatile. The geode art was the biggest splurge, but I can see myself using it in most any room. It would fit perfectly in my master bedroom, for example. Candles, jars, planters and faux plants can work throughout the home and are basic accessories, perfect for refreshing spaces when the mood to redecorate strikes.

I’m excited that this seasonal makeover is versatile enough to work throughout the year — and throughout the home.

A home full of windows and natural light was at the top of my house-hunting list when we found this place. The sunroom, added onto the back of the home, is pretty much the feature that sold us. It’s a big, beautiful room with vaulted ceilings, rustic walls, and incredible light. It’s like a mountain cabin, set in the city.

The one downside to tons of windows, is purchasing window treatments. Thankfully, the wood blinds came with the home {which would have been a huge investment}; but I also felt this space needed a bit of softening with curtains. Everything in the room had straight lines or a hard texture, except for our couch and chair.

White curtains simply frame a window, letting you focus on the view outdoors.

It wasn’t difficult to choose the curtains. I’ve used basic, white, curtains in several rooms. They offer a casual, breezy look that seemed perfect for this room. I knew that white curtains would frame the windows, drawing the eye out the window and to the scenic view. This wasn’t a room in which I needed — or wanted — curtains to become the focal point.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

You’ll notice that we didn’t flank every window with curtains. Privacy wasn’t really critical since we already have the blinds. I used 8 curtains for 14 windows. On each end of the room, there is a set of three windows flanked by two curtains. Across the length of the sunroom, there are 4 curtains for 8 windows. I chose the location of each curtain based on how it looked with the furniture. For example, a curtain on each side of our couch — which equaled 3 windows.

So, how did I hang these? Electrical conduit and metal hardware.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

You can search “pipe curtain rods” or “DIY curtain rods” on Pinterest and find a variety of tutorials. This Custom Long Drapery Rod tutorial from Sarah M. Dorsey Designs was one of the most helpful. We didn’t follow that tutorial exactly, but it’s a great reference.

DIY Long Curtain Rod: Supplies

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

1/2″ Diameter Split Ring Hanger
1/2″ Diameter Conduit
3/8″ Threaded Rod
3/8″ Ceiling Flange
Rigid Tubing/Conduit Cutter
Goo-Gone
Drill
Screwdriver
Screws {+ anchors, depending on if you are drilling into studs or drywall}

DIY Long Curtain Rod: Instructions

Sarah M. Dorsey chose to spray paint her curtain rods black, which really compliments that room and definitely makes this a very versatile project. Essentially, you could easily coordinate this drapery rod with your existing hardware. In our Sunroom, we didn’t want to draw the eye up or create much contrast. The galvanized steel was great as-is {yay for simplicity!} and just required a little goo-gone to remove sticker labels from the conduit.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

We used a single piece of conduit for each end of the room and several pieces across the length of the space. Take time to measure and determine where the braces will be located, so that you can cut the conduit to meet at a brace.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

We placed each brace between window frames to give it a consistent look.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

Cutting the conduit was amazingly simple with a Rigid Tubing Cutter. I had never used one before, but it was straightforward, quick and easy. The threaded rod, on the other hand, was not so simple.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

We needed about 5″ of rod per brace in order to hang the curtain rod out far enough that it would clear the wood blinds. My husband ended up requesting the help of a friend to saw them into 5″ pieces because we didn’t have the correct blade for our table saw.

DIY Long Curtain Rods: Nearly 50 ft for less than $75.

Once you’ve got everything measured and cut to size, assemble each section and hang the curtains. It really transformed our room, softening the space and making it feel finished. Plus, the total price was less than $75 for nearly 50 ft of curtain rod.

How to DIY Long Curtain Rods. Our sunroom is a large room, filled with windows. Purchasing curtain rods would have been much more expensive than this DIY solution. by @CraftivityD

What an incredible price, right? Even inexpensive 10 ft curtain rods are $35 and up, which would have meant that we’d be spending at least $175. Plus, that is assuming we would have been able to find curtain rods that cleared the depth of the wood blinds. We are incredibly pleased with a custom look for a fraction of the price.

Have you ever DIY’d curtain rods? How did you make them?

Brittani chose pineapples because she’s always loved them and her daughter has a Lily dress that is bright and colorful with a pineapple print. Plus, this fun party theme completely fit the birthday girl’s personality.

She used the hashtag #partylikeapineapple which perfectly fit her focal feature at the buffet table — a cool pineapple decked out in pink sunglasses.

Her little girl loved the cake, of course {what kid doesn’t, right?}, which was covered in bright yellow icing then topped with bright green pineapple leaves and a smiley face. He’s almost too cute to eat. Almost.

Since this party was partly inspired by her daughter’s bold personality, Brittani placed several quotes on the table to inspire and encourage her sweet girl. She chose “Be a flamingo… in a flock of pigeons” and “Be a Pineapple… stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside.” A perfect reminder that as they celebrate her special day, she’s growing into her own, beautiful person.

I love how well Brittani played off the tropical vibe with the raffia style table skirt, bright colors, and flamingos.

She stuck flamingo straws in pineapple cups, which could double as a party favor, too. My son gets excited about basic plastic cups from restaurants, so I’m betting these cute cups would be a huge hit with kids.

Brittani’s menu included simple options that make for easy prep, such as fresh fruits, crackers, and cheese {with adorable flamingo toothpicks}. I know that when I’m planning my kids’ birthdays, easy menus let me have fun with some of those other details — which the kids will remember the most, anyway.

How many of you are a huge Pinterest fan, like me? I’ve always torn pages from magazines to save as inspiration — so a pin-board for the internet has been up my alley since the day I first heard of Pinterest. Since I’m naturally drawn to this concept, I’ve always invested time into it. It’s been a source of inspiration for my home, my blog, and my shop. I’ve learned a ton through tutorials found via Pinterest, and I’ve discovered some of my favorite bloggers through this handy site.

Yet, there is still so much to learn.

Boardbooster Referral Links are included in this post.

Specifically, I can learn more about how to grow my own blog using Pinterest. Over the last 4 months, I’ve been using a new tool to grow my Pinterest following and increase my Pin frequency {aka. how often I pin}. It’s called Boardbooster and is the first time I’ve really invested in my blog — outside of buying my domain and web hosting.

Why Boardbooster?

Boardbooster is an effective tool for scheduling Pins, but it’s also very affordable.

For $5/month, Boardbooster provides 500 pins a month. This allows me to be active in the “Pinterest World” on a daily basis, about 16 pins per day. However, I don’t have to actually spend time pinning content every day. Maybe I’m cheap, but prior to signing up for Boardbooster, I had tried to just pin 5-10 times per day. That gets complicated because it’s better to Pin in the evenings even though I typically would have time to Pin in the mornings. Plus, some days are just too busy and it’s easy to be inconsistent.

I know that I love to blog, but I also know I can’t do everything. It was time to invest money somewhere — and Pinterest growth is what made the most sense. Nearly 50% of my Blog Traffic comes from Pinterest, and it drives many of my Etsy Shop sales. There are tons of things I could spend money on {CoScheduler, e-courses, etc.}, but investing in Pinterest is the best strategy for my blog, right now.

Does Boardbooster Work?

Yes. Well, it has for me… let me explain.

I’ve been using Boardbooster for 4 months and, in that time, my Followers have increased by 35%. In the 4 months prior to joining Boardbooster, my Followers had only increased by 16%.

On a monthly basis, I was seeing an average of 4% growth, and now I average about 9% growth in Pinterest Followers each month.

How to Paint Brick

Assuming similar growth continues, I will have doubled my Pinterest following by September, by investing only $35 over the course of 7 months. Plus, I’ve saved myself a ton of time by scheduling Pins instead of pinning “real-time.”

How Do I Use Boardbooster?

There are 3 types of pinning tools within Boardbooster: Campaigns, Scheduler, and Looping.

Campaigns

A Campaign pins from selected boards to other selected boards. For example, I have a campaign setup to schedule 5 pins per day from my Board “Craftivity Designs | Best of the Blog” to 5 different Group Boards.

How to Grow Pinterest Followers with Boardbooster, Boardbooster Review, Increase Pinterest Followers, Pin Scheduler @CraftivityD

It’s a “Random Campaign” which means it chooses pins from “Craftivity Designs | Best of the Blog” randomly. This is a great feature because it pulls both old and new blog content for repinning.

Scheduler

The Scheduler allows you to — can you guess? — schedule pins. I use the Scheduler more often than pinning “real-time.” Why? Because I may come across a great Pin from a blogger-friend at 8 AM… which is not a great time to Pin. I could share it at 8 AM; but it would be more likely to receive Repins if I schedule it for later.

How to Grow Pinterest Followers with Boardbooster, Boardbooster Review, Increase Pinterest Followers, Pin Scheduler @CraftivityDHow to Grow Pinterest Followers with Boardbooster, Boardbooster Review, Increase Pinterest Followers, Pin Scheduler @CraftivityD

In Scheduler, Boardbooster creates a hidden board that you pin to instead. So, for the above example, I have a hidden board called “-DIYHomeDecorIdeas.”

How to Grow Pinterest Followers with Boardbooster, Boardbooster Review, Increase Pinterest Followers, Pin Scheduler @CraftivityDHow to Grow Pinterest Followers with Boardbooster, Boardbooster Review, Increase Pinterest Followers, Pin Scheduler @CraftivityD

It’s here, and other hidden Scheduler boards, that I typically pin. Then Boardbooster pins those over a period of days, at the best times for pinning, based on the parameters that I’ve set within the Scheduler.

Looping

Looping is an interesting feature which works to revive old pins, specifically those with low repins. It repins the pin, on the same board in which it currently exists, and deletes one of those pins {so there aren’t dupiclates} after a set period of time. It chooses which pin to delete based on the number of repins.

In other words, if you wrote a post several years ago — even if it was a great post — your followers may have never seen it. The Looping function moves it up to the top of the board, for Followers to see in their feed.

Should you invest in Boardbooster? If Pinterest is a primary traffic source for your site and you are looking for a small investment, I think Boardbooster is a great option. At a minimum, it’s definitely worth giving the free trial a spin and testing it out.

Going into this holiday weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about hospitality. Now that we are moving, time with precious friends becomes more important. We want to enjoy time visiting, talking and letting the kids play together; before we no longer live nearby.

Often, we get wrapped up in having everything “ready” in order to entertain. Yet, that’s not really what hospitality is all about. I think of this scripture in Acts, which reads “They broke bread together in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” God has impressed on me that our heart, not our homes, is what defines true hospitality.

It’s our heart, not our homes, that defines true hospitality. #gladandsincerehearts

As much as I love to decorate — and create — a beautiful home, I know that hospitality means being comfortable letting others into our home when it’s not perfect. I’m not perfect, my family isn’t perfect and our home isn’t either. My friends and family know that. Welcoming them into our home, even when it’s not perfect, requires a sincere heart that is honest about our imperfections.

Acts 2:48 // Hospitality Free Printable

Running around crazy, snapping at my kids to clean things up, being impatient and anxious… that isn’t hospitality. Even though our guests haven’t even entered the home yet, I’m not preparing for them with a glad heart.

Instead, a glad heart asks the kids for help; but in an encouraging and uplifting way. I should ask for their help with an attitude that isn’t focused on perfection but instead, is focused on the anticipation of visitors.

As a reminder of what true hospitality is actually about, I’ve hung this Bible Verse Art on our deck, where we often entertain. I’ve created an 8×10 version for you to download, too.

You’re getting a peek of a recent project completed for our deck. I’ll be sharing it next month, but I completed it with hospitality in mind, too. So much of hospitality is in the preparation, both of our hearts and our homes. When it’s simple to entertain, we are more likely to invite others into our home. It’s not as difficult to offer a glad heart when we’ve been intentional about creating a home that welcomes guests.

Much of hospitality is in the preparation, both of our heart and our homes. #hospitality

There are simple ways to be intentional in our homes, to make it guest friendly…. just having a place for someone to sleep, a place to serve food and a place to relax and a place to play. They won’t necessarily be perfect spaces, but they can be prepared in a way that doesn’t require rearranging our entire home to welcome a guest. I don’t want to let last minute visits invoke anxiety so that I can focus on the anticipation of visiting with friends.

How can you better prepare your home to welcome others with glad and sincere hearts?

9 Creative Summer Ideas from 9 DIY Bloggers via @CraftivityD

I’m sharing a farmhouse style table setting. It’s casual, rustic and simple, perfect for outdoor meals on cool, summer evenings.

I grabbed the vase of hydrangeas from our breakfast nook to use as a centerpiece and set it atop a rustic wooden tray. This tray was previously a shadow box designed to be hung on the wall. I added oil-rubbed bronze handles, gave it a coat of protective Minwax, and turned it into a serving tray.

We don’t have much space to spare on this patio table, so the tray provides form and function. It feels like a centerpiece but corrals several items including the flower vase, a water pitcher, candle, and fruit.

Now, that pitcher, isn’t it adorable? I found him at a flea market and he provides a definite farmhouse feel.

A casual cotton tablecloth plus woven placemats make for a casual base. I rolled up cloth napkins and tied them with twine, then placed the utensils in mason jars on a serving bar nearby.

For the appetizers, I used transparent blue plates from a yard sale. I don’t buy many dishes anymore, but these were an affordable set that adds a little color to my white dinner plates. If you don’t have full sets of dinnerware, or if you like a variety of styles — don’t be afraid to mix and match. It makes a table interesting and unique. I’m so glad that we chose a neutral china set for our wedding registry because it makes it easy to mix in other colors depending on the season or holiday .

The small turquoise coasters below the glasses were a yard sale find, as well. They aren’t needed outdoors, on this type of table; but I like the pop of color — which also ties into the color of our outdoor pillows.

My mom is in town this week — and she can sew — which means we’ll be working on more cushion covers for the patio. Our outdoor space is really coming along, and I’m looking forward to sharing more over the next few weeks.

In the meantime, take a visit to each of the other blogs featured in the Creative Summer Ideas Blog Hop. After getting a peek at their project images last week, I’ve been excited to check out the full posts this morning. I hope you’ll spend time visiting each of them and saying “Hello!”

If you’ve got a young child, it’s a must-do. Not only does it keep my son entertained for hours, but it’s a fairly mess-free way to play in the sand.

DIY Portable Sandbox. How to Make a Portable Sandbox. Plus, it's a mess-free sandbox! by @CraftivityD

How so? Well, this DIY Portable Sandbox is made with a special type of sand that won’t be in every nook and cranny of your child’s body and clothing. Instead, it sticks to itself — which means the kids can get their hands “dirty” without mom having to worry that they’ll be tracking sand throughout the house.

Head over to Beauty in the Mess to find out how to make a portable sandbox for your kids.
