How to Make an Easy Ninja Costume

Want to make a DIY no-sew Halloween costume for your kids? Learn how to make an easy ninja costume for Halloween (or a Ninjago costume).

Both our fall decorations and festivities have been following a “keep it simple” theme this year. With new floors and the laundry room/bath renovation, it just makes sense to keep the holiday activity low-maintenance. This no-sew, easy ninja costume is just that; and it was nearly free, too!

Red Ninjago Costume

Maybe I’m an awful mom, but we nixed his first request – a gold Ninjago – because he didn’t have a yellow pant and shirt combination. Luckily, he’s pretty flexible and we ran with the red Ninjago costume, instead.

Despite the fancy name, Ninjago’s are simply ninjas within the Lego brand. Therefore, this easy outfit can be used as a typical ninja costume, or as a Ninjago costume

How to Make an Easy Ninja Costume

Supplies Needed

  • Red Pants
  • 2 Red Shirts
  • Black Fabric (approx. 1 yd)
  • Wood Sword

Instructions

  1. First, cut the black fabric into 8 strips which are approximately 2-3 inches wide. Determine the length of each strip by measuring the distance around the:
    • ankles (cut 2 strips)
    • wrists (cut 2 strips)
    • waist (cut 1 strip)
    • head (cut 1 strip)
    • chest (cut 2 strips)
  2. Next, tie the two chest strips together in the center, creating an “X” shape.
  3. Once the black fabric strips are complete, follow this tutorial from Frugal Fun for Boys and Girls to transform one of the red t-shirts into a hood. easy ninja costume for Halloween
  4. Next, dress the child in a matching pant and shirt set.
  5. Once dressed, wrap and tie the black strips for the ankles, wrists, waist, and head.
  6. For the chest, wrap and tie the black strips so that the “X” shape is visible on the front of the chest (as shown). easy ninja costume for Halloween

Ninja Costume Ideas

My Ninjago fan loved this easy costume. It’s quite versatile, too!

  1. For starters, the colors are easily changeable. Don’t have a red sweatsuit in the closet? Swap out red for whichever color clothing you have on hand.
  2. Mix in other weapons besides wooden swords, such as ninja stars or ninja knives
  3. Add ninja gloves or shoes to finish off the full look.

Tips & Tricks

  • Rather than buy a solid color shirt, simply choose a graphic tee in the correct color and flip it inside out.
  • Don’t worry about unhemmed edges on the black strips. Ninjas don’t have time to sew seams (and neither do you, right?!). Simply leave the edges unfinished for a slightly disheveled (but realistic) “Ninja vibe.”
