A Small Nightstand

I can be a picky shopper. Our nightstand search is the perfect example. It began last summer – yes, as in nearly 9 months ago. I didn’t expect that finding a small nightstand would be so difficult; but I kept running into the same problems.

Too short.

Our bed sits high so that we can store off-season clothing beneath it.

Too wide.

The bedroom is small — and even though a wider night stand fit, a smaller one would suit the space better.

Too expensive.

I couldn’t bring myself to spend $100+ on a nightstand that isn’t even solid wood. After all, our entire dining cabinet was only $200 {always shop for second-hand furniture, ya’ll}.

Utilizing inspiration photos helps me make decisions. After looking at these photos {many times}, I kept coming back to several details.

  1. Wood tones would provide more warmth. Overall, this room has a lot of cool tones; so the contrasting tone and texture would be a benefit.
  2.  Drawers — or space to stow a basket — are both great options in terms of storage and style.
  3. A tall and thin shape is the best option for this small space.

Last week, while visiting my mom, we found this nightstand at a Peddlar’s Mall in Louisville.

In terms of style, I was open to anything… antiques, mid-century, transitional, rustic, etc. This nightstand is an antique and was produced by Consider H. Willet, a Louisville furniture company that closed in 1962. It has traditional lines, which is a good addition to this room. So many of the pieces in here {like the wardrobes} have modern, simple lines and a contrasting antique is a nice addition.

It’s bright and welcoming during the day, and cozy at night. It features an eclectic mix of both colors and textures; which I love, and feels true to our style. Plus — and maybe most importantly — it’s an incredibly functional space. We have so much storage in this not-so-big room with a tiny closet. Even this small nightstand is helping out. I’ll share a little more about that, next week.

Do you shop forever for the perfect piece? For which piece of furniture did you search the longest?

I shop for things forever, too. I thought I was the only one. I hear you on price and correct fit! Right now, I have been shopping for nightstands for the longest time, but still cannot find the perfect ones. A;so, even something a simple a searching for the perfect lampshade has been a process. Love how your room is turning out!!
