Organizing a closet or cabinet always seems to be more effective and longer-lasting when labels are used. Now, don’t get me wrong, labels aren’t a perfect solution… but they do help.

There are many situations in which I intentionally skip labeling. For example, I didn’t label the coat hooks in our entryway with names, because they need to be flexible for use by all of us. So, before labeling, always ask yourself whether it’s practical.

There are several reasons to label when organizing.

  1. The contents in the bin/box/basket are not visible without opening the container.
  2. Define the purpose of a container, so that it does not become a catch-all.
  3. Hold the place for something that is gone but will be refilled {for example, a flour container in the pantry}.
  4. Enable other people, besides you, to find items.
  5. Encourage quick clean-up since the destination of an item is clear.

There may be other reasons, but be thoughtful about what, why, and how you label.

Like organizing, labeling isn’t permanent either. Lifestyles change. Storage needs change. When I print out a set of labels, I’ll usually print extras — or at least keep the file handy. That way, when I need to change a label, it’s a simple process. I like printable labels for this reason {as opposed to purchasing a set of labels} because I’m not limited to the number of labels that comes in the set.

My perfectionist side can’t handle one odd label mixed in with a set of matching tags. Maybe you’re like me?

If so, this set of Buffalo Check {or plaid or gingham… call it what you’d like!} labels may be right up your alley. The set includes hanging tags, square labels, and a sheet of coordinating paper that can be used for any size label. Plus, pick from 6 colors to match your home and storage needs.

I’m drawn to the blues, greens, and grays; and printed out several sets for our entryway closet, the office desk, and our son’s bedroom.

Use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut out the labels. Typically, I’ll laminate the label to help protect it from damage.

Very cute! I love the color selections. Labeling is so helpful when organizing and I like the idea of laminating them because then you can change the label so easily.

Laminating makes them much more durable, too.

I love them!! I have yet to start labeling, though. Haha Your reasons make sense though, so I might get to it. :) XO! Vanessa

Loving the buffalo check/plaid, especially in gray :) And I am so with you, if the labels don't match, it sends my OCD into overdrive haha! Best, Kelly

I love the design you chose. I have some labels for some organizing projects and have to agree that not all things need to be labeled just because. It does not make sense and sometimes could wind up looking a bit cluttered. I love the way you explained the reasons to label items. These are super cute with the buffalo (who doesn't like buffalo check) and will look great in any organized area of the home.

Thanks, Zan! Buffalo check has been popular lately, but I think it's a classic pattern :)
