13+ Gray Furniture Makeovers + Paint Colors

Check out 13+ Gray Furniture Makeovers, with paint colors included, to inspire you to refinish an old piece. Choose a gray to refresh old furniture.

Since we are moving — but have not yet sold our home — I’ve been working on projects that we can “take with us.” Projects that aren’t part of the architecture of the home, such as crafts and furniture makeovers. Some of you might be in a similar position. Is your house for sale? Are you renting? No time or budget for renovations?

If so, re-doing a piece of furniture is a great project. It’s affordable, practical, and can still make a pretty big impact in a space.

Similar to the new Exterior Colors Series, I’ll also be featuring that same monthly color on furniture. Wintery, gloomy, days call for an array of gray shades that could be used to freshen up old furniture. For each example, I’ve included the name of the paint color — but click through to the original post for paint brands, finishes, glazes, and protective coats.

Light Gray Furniture Makeovers

If you like the look of white furniture, but want a color with a bit more depth {or that is less likely to show dirt}, go with a light gray. It’s a very versatile neutral color, and a great choice to lighten up a room that is filled with dark wood furniture.

Mid-Tone Gray Furniture Makeovers

If you’re looking for a little more drama, but aren’t quite ready for a near-black look, choose a mid-tone gray. This shade of gray works especially well with light wood tones. Add a bit of distressing around the edges to reveal the warm wood underneath, perfectly complementing the cool gray.

A smoky gray is perfect for this tall, ornate, linen cabinet.

Charcoal Gray Furniture Makeovers

Choose a nearly-black, charcoal, for the most dramatic look. Charcoal will pop against a light color wall, with a sophisticated and modern feel.

Paint a dresser in a deep charcoal; but leave the top unpainted and stained to a warm, deep, wood-tone.

I don’t consider myself a furniture makeover expert, but I have painted a few pieces {like a vanitynightstand and this small dresser}. On my to-do list are several furniture makeovers of pieces we currently own. Each piece was either a hand-me-down or from a thrift shop.

I’ve recently met a group of talented ladies {those featured in this post!} and have been so impressed with their refinishing skills. If you’re impressed, too, spend time searching their blogs. Most of these ladies have made over many pieces — which means tons of inspiration and tips for you and me!

Do you have a furniture piece that would look lovely in a gray makeover? Which gray would you choose?

I love this roundup - so many wonderful ideas! And I think I am behind on the news, but congratulations on the move. I can only imagine how hard that is, especially as a DIY'er. But hello, an entirely new house to decorate with endless possibilities :) Best, Kelly

that has to be so frustrating being in limbo between houses! Especially for a DIYer! I love Peppercorn as a furniture paint color - a moody grey blue.

Gray is my favorite color haha so I'm loving all every single one of these pieces. I really like the mid-tone grays the best I think, not too light, but not too dark. So pretty, thanks for sharing!
