Learn how to make a DIY Aztec Table. This painted furniture tutorial includes the tips, tricks, and products to complete a bohemian-style makeover.
We’ve got another new addition in our entryway, besides the map wall. There is a narrow spot next to our front door that is perfect for a small console table — and while it has been in this spot for awhile, it finally got a makeover.
I picked this table up for $12 at a consignment shop. It had a faux marble top — with stains to boot. My gal pals, who were shopping with me, were skeptical at best. When I arrived home with my treasure, the hubs wasn’t too impressed either.

How to make an Aztec Table
Though my friends and family were skeptical, I had a vision for this vintage table. After 3 coats of Martha Stewart Vintage Decor Paint in Charcoal it was already looking better.
The “painted” Aztec pattern is actually completed with a chalk marker. To start, find an Aztec design to use as a guide. I chose this print from Fancy That Design House as my inspiration piece.
Start the design in the middle of the table. Use a ruler to measure and mark the center with a dot. From that point, I started drawing. If it was a small line, like that diamond, I would just freehand it. If the lines were
From that point, start drawing. If it was a short line, like the sides of the diamond, simply freehand it. If the lines are long, it’s best to use a straight edge as a guide.
One thing I really like about this chalk marker is the solid coverage. When you color in a shape, the coverage is more opaque than a regular piece of chalk, giving it a painted look.
I wanted this design to feel hand-painted, bohemian, and casual. Therefore, I didn’t worry with painter’s tape and perfect lines. The chalk marker aids in creating a hand-painted look, too.
To protect the surface, add several light coats of favorite clear spray paint. Once you can scratch your finger across the chalk without leaving a mark, stop adding coats of the gloss {a very technical method, ha!}.
An Entry Way Console Table
This Aztec Table acts as a landing spot for items that we need to take when we leave the house. It’s not styled with accessories because we use the surface daily.
Underneath the table, we keep a basket of shoes for the little guy.
Above the Aztec Table are several pieces of meaningful artwork. I’m passionate about Creating a Home that reflects our family, so it only makes sense to have several special pieces right at the entrance to our home.
Maybe you aren’t a fan of Aztec or Bohemian prints? You can still give this technique a try! Choose your favorite print, or a stencil, and use a chalk marker to get the look.

Thanks, Lauren!! It wasn't too bad actually -- which is good; because I have zero patience for tedious things :)
