Did you know that Saturday is Earth Day? Each spring, I look forward to planting herbs so that we can enjoy the taste of fresh herbs in our meals, all summer long. With Earth Day in mind, I decided to create this year’s herb garden from recycled plastic bottles and twine — a Macrame Herb Garden.

Honest® Tea bottles were the perfect pairing for this project because the Honest® brand is pure and transparent — both with respect to the ingredients used and how they make the earth a better place {Honest® Tea is both fair trade and organic}. So, on a beautiful morning, the kids and I celebrated Earth Day by planting herbs and drinking tea.

Macrame Herb Garden: Supplies

Macrame Herb Garden: Instructions

Step 1: Pour a glass of tea to sip while you work! Next, rinse out the Honest® Tea bottles and remove the labels.

Step 2: Use a utility knife to cut the bottle. I cut it along the top indentation in the plastic, which left about 2/3 of the bottle for the project.

Step 3: Fill the bottles with a small layer of pebbles and a larger layer of dirt {leaving room to add the plant}.

Step 4: Tuck the plant into the bottle. I chose Sweet Basil and Lemon Balm as the herbs.

Step 5: Measure 8 lengths of twine that are approximately 24″ each and cut. Tie a knot at the top to keep the strands together.

Step 6: Separate out two strands, and tie a knot approximately 2″ down from the knot. Repeat, with each set of two, which will result in 4 knots. In the example below, strands #1 and #2 are tied together.

Step 7: Take one strand each from two different knots, and tie a knot in those strands about 1.5″ down the strand. Repeat until there are 4 more knots. In the example below, strands #2 and #3 are tied together.

Step 8: Again, pull one strand from each knot and tie a new knot, about 1.5″ down the strand. In the example below, strands #1 and #2 are now tied back together.

Step 9: Use your hand to open the macrame, and set the plant into it. Pull the twine up and tie all of the strands into a knot at the top to hang.

Honest® Tea Unsweetend Peach Ginger Tea

Find Honest® Tea in the bottled tea aisle at Kroger stores and grab a coupon for .25 off 1 bottle of Honest® Tea through 4/22 {can be used on up to 5 bottles}.

Peach Ginger Tea has no sugar added and is brewed with real tea leaves. It’s a light, refreshing, and unsweetened tea, just as I like {and, yes, even though I love my unsweetened tea, I’m not from the North #someonealwaysasks}. Any other Southerners out there like their tea unsweetened? Try Honest® Tea. And even if you aren’t typically an unsweetened tea drinker, I bet you’ll love the slight fruitiness of the Peach Ginger Tea.

I've drank this tea before and it does taste great. It's a creative idea to re-purpose the bottles into planters like this. I don't think I'd seen them in the packets, though.

How fun! I love the hanging aspect of this--fresh herbs are wonderful! I need to pick some more up for my garden too since my mint is the only one that survived the winter!

Thanks, Nicole!! Mint is a durable one :) I hear it spreads a lot, too.
