I like the structure that comes with back to school. Though summer is a wonderful time for family and fun, I miss the routine of a scheduled week. This, in turn, puts me in the mood to get life organized. Early fall is similar to January — after the hustle and bustle of travels and parties, you have to get your home back in shape. Well, our upstairs bath was one of those spots that had gotten a bit disorganized… and it was time for a refresh.

When you refresh a space, ask, “how well is this functioning for my family?” Consider what works and what doesn’t. In the case of our bathroom, the vanity had some problem spots. Vanities are always tough because of the pipes under the sink. Typically it’s a tight space, and not suitable for large storage products.
Woven Bin, Wood Crate, Wood Tray
So, go small with storage. Mix and match your pieces in a variety of shapes and sizes. Choose containers that can be stacked, which enables you to layer in bathroom storage around awkward pipes. I picked up all three of these at Target for less than $25 to solve some of our vanity storage concerns. I’ve become a big believer in stylish storage options. You don’t have to invest tons of money in pretty bathroom storage containers to achieve a stylish look because there are so many affordable options.
I also grabbed some black twine from the Dollar Spot in order to make tassels for the woven bin and other baskets in our bathroom. It’s a simple way to make a classic item feel chic and modern.
Bathroom Organization Ideas: Stylish DIY Tassels
Have you ever made tassels? So easy. No fancy skills needed.
First, fold approximately 3 yards worth of twin in half. Then repeatedly fold it in half until it is approximately 2-3 inches in length.
After the last fold, squeeze near the top of the bundle and wrap it with another piece of twine. Tie it tight to secure the bundle. Then, use scissors to snip the large loops in half.

Finally, thread another piece of twine through the small loops. This will be what ties onto the woven basket or bin.
These chic black tassels add a touch of personality to this simple bathroom refresh, don’t you think?
Bathroom Organization Ideas: Layered Storage
The wood tray and crate both received a coat of stain, which fit perfectly with the rustic wood details found throughout our bathroom. The tray is layered atop a metal pull-out drawer which didn’t have a top surface, and made the space above it a waste. Now, it’s functional space, holding cleaning supplies and a basket full of toiletries in the wooden tray.
Similarly, layering was effective on the opposite side of the vanity. Our kids’ bath cloths were always in a messy pile, but now they are tucked into the wooden crate. I placed it underneath a metal shelf which holds hand towels. Again, stacking a mix of storage items is a smart use of the awkward space around sink pipes.
Mixing wood and metal is a fit with the farmhouse style of this bathroom. Storage doesn’t have to match decor, and it doesn’t have to be pretty, but I’m much more likely to keep it tidy when I love how it looks.
Bathroom Organization Ideas: Smart Choices
Like I mentioned, always consider what functions well — and what doesn’t function well — when refreshing a space. Though our storage needed some updates, there is one thing about our bathroom that functions incredibly well. It seems basic, but it is critical to an efficient bathroom. We only keep items in the vanity that we use regularly. We use most of the items daily, in fact. If it’s not used daily, we store it on the wall shelves or in the hall closet. Keep the most important items close at hand.
For example, our toilet paper is on the left end of the vanity, nearest the toilet.
It’s even smart to keep shopping lists close at hand. Why? Because we always think of what we need when we need it, not when we are at the store. I made a simple corkboard for the inside of our cabinet door, which holds a re-stock list and pencil. Hopefully, this will help us keep track of what items need to be purchased for the bathroom. I found the square corkboard, clip and push pins in the office section at Target. The black and white pencils were in the Dollar Spot, just begging to hop in my cart with the black twine {wink}.

I need to get some of those metal shelves for the space under our sink. Right now, the space is really poorly used and these would be a perfect solution.

Yes one bathroom can make it tough! We have two, but the second is not near any of our bedrooms, so it's kind of like only having one in terms of what we have to fit in the space.
