Download and print 3 free travel game templates. Use this set of road trip printables to create a travel kit for kids and fight boredom on long car rides.
Are you vacationing this summer? What are you most looking forward to? I’m guessing, it’s not the traveling. Maybe it’s a tedious car ride… or lengthy layovers… but, in general, we look forward to the destination, not the journey.
We’ve got a 12-hour car ride ahead of us {both ways} when we visit Disney, this fall. It might be weird, but my husband and I really enjoy the journey. We visit local restaurants in small towns, talk for hours without turning the radio on, and aren’t afraid to take a back road or two. However, those same joys can be a bit tedious with small kids. Therefore, we’re being intentional about travel this year, in hopes that the kids can start to embrace the journey.

How so? Well, I’ve got a handful of ideas to share over the next few weeks, starting with a travel kit.
Build a Travel Kit
Begin building a travel kit by gathering several empty containers. We had 3 baby wipe cases on hand, but you could also use plastic food strorage or pencil boxes, for example. Want labels for your travel kit? Grab Build Me, Play Me, and Color Me at the end of this post. For added durability, laminate each label. I used permanent glue dots to adhere the label to the case.

You know your kids best, so be creative with filling each box. My son is an avid Lego fan, so Build Me includes building blocks and a Lego character. In Color Me, there is a set of crayons and several small blank notepads.
What’s in Play Me? Well, it’s filled with another set of printables designed for an intentional journey, together as a family.
Gather Free Travel Game Printables
You can find an array of great road trip printables online — including several travel game templates at the end of this post. Travel games aren’t just boredom busters, they also promote family conversation and engagement.
- Hangman: Have older kids try to stump you with a tricky Hangman phrase. With young children, choose simple early reader words and develop spelling skills while they play.
- Alphabet Game: Search for all the letters of the alphabet. Up the ante, and compete to see who can finish the fastest.
- I Spy: Work as a family to complete a single I Spy card. With a competitive bunch, hand each person a card. Then, set a timer and see who can find the most items on their card, in that timeframe.

Print out a set of travel game templates for your next road trip. The templates included in this post are small, at about 3.75″ square, so that they can fit into the travel kit containers {such as a baby wipes case}.
- Print, cut, and fold Hangman in half. The back side of the Hangman card is provided to mark off used letters.
- Print, cut, and fold Tic Tac Toe/Alphabet Game in half.
- Print and cut out individual I Spy cards so that multiple people can play using different boards.
- Laminate each card so that it is durable and re-usable with dry-erase markers.
- Fill up a travel kit container, including the dry-erase markers.
Ready to play? Fight boredom. Chat and compete as a family. Make the journey fun.
Pull it all Together
Once you’ve prepped each small kit, find an unused backpack or tote to stow everything inside. Store the travel kit in the car trunk or the coat closet — so that it is easily at hand when it’s time to go on the road.
