5 Simple Christmas Decorating Tips

#1: CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE

I embraced a black and green color palette this year, inspired by our DIY Advent Wreath. When I chose a focal color palette, I didn’t run to the store and buy all the black and green things. In fact, I didn’t buy anything black and green. Instead, as I decorated each room, I had a goal in mind. For example, starting in the Dining Room, I only pulled items out of the storage totes that fit that general palette.

This may seem like common sense, but you don’t have to use every decor item, every year. Once I realized that, decorating for Christmas became less stressful. Plus, it provides variety from year to year and makes decorating more enjoyable. If it’s a busy year for you, choose one room and one color palette, and save the rest of your decor for Christmases in the future.

#2: INCORPORATE EVERYDAY DECOR

To keep Christmas decor from feeling overdone and forced, mix it in with your everyday decor. For example, I used wooden Christmas trees paired with basic green wreaths and white plates on our mantel. Since I’d already chosen a color scheme, it was easy to grab a few Christmas items and everyday items to mix on the mantel within that palette.

When you mix Christmas decor in and around everyday decor, you won’t have to dismantle an entire room in order to decorate for Christmas. I do put some everyday items in storage, but most of it is left out through the holidays.

#3: DON’T SKIP SENTIMENTAL ITEMS

Just because I’ve suggested using a color palette, doesn’t mean you can’t use your family’s favorite sentimental decor. Our Christmas Stockings are made from vintage quilts and filled with a variety of colors. They don’t match the green and black color palette of our dining room, which actually allows them to shine. The rest of the room feels very cohesive and the individual details blend together, which lets the stockings hung below the mantel act as a focal point in the room.

#4: BE CREATIVE AND AVOID A DECORATING RUT

We don’t just get stuck on the same-‘ole color palettes, we also tend to use the same items, in the same way, year after year. I love a beautiful Christmas Village and decided to mix it up this year. Over the summer, the kids and I, spent time pouring over the details of the fairy gardens that were entered in the Kentucky State Fair. My son loved looking at tiny items tucked around the plants. So, inspired by fairy gardens, our Christmas Village is different this year.

This buffet has never had a Christmas Village on it… we’ve never used pillow stuffing as snow… and our village has never had plants in it! Yet, it was so much fun to get creative and make something new for Christmas this year.

#5: HAVE FUN!

It’s the merriest time of year, so have fun in decorating. If you don’t love to decorate, keep it really simple. If you love to decorate, go all out. Much of keeping things simple is knowing what you like to do, and what you don’t like to do… and what your life permits in terms of time during this season.

For us, Celebrating Advent is what we love most about the Holidays. So, I made a DIY Advent Wreath for our table and we are reading through Scripture in our Advent Calendar. We don’t have an Elf on the Shelf {even though it would be fun!} and we don’t do tons of Christmas Baking {I don’t enjoy it… and adding kids makes it worse} and we don’t hand-write or address Christmas cards {even though it’s so much more thoughful}. All of those activities are wonderful, but we can’t do it all — and neither can you. Pick your favorite things about the Holidays, and skip the other stuff.

THANK YOU for saying that about sentimental items!! I feel that so often we overlook pieces that mean a lot just because they don't "fit" or aren't trendy. Your home looks lovely.

:) Thanks, Sarah! Yes, if we skip sentimental for style... well, I feel like that's missing the point of what style is -- us!
