You’ve heard the phrase, “The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home.” Isn’t that true? Hearts work hard — both in our body and in our home. The day starts with coffee brewing in the kitchen. It ends with cleaning dishes and wiping down counters before bed.
Hard-working rooms need smart solutions for cleaning and organization. When you are creating a home for your family, consider both (1) good design and (2) daily care. From design materials to simple storage containers, work towards an easy-to-clean space.
Farmhouse Style Faucet
Our Farmhouse Style Kitchen hasn’t changed much since move-in day. All we’ve done is:
- remove the plaid wallpaper
- apply a fresh coat of paint
- switch the tile to a simple black and white design
For the time being, we didn’t have any other plans, but a leaky faucet changed that… as leaky faucets do, right?!
Polished Nickel Faucet : Before
The existing polished nickel faucet didn’t seem to match the Farmhouse Vibe we were after in the kitchen. Our go-to hardware finishes in this home have been oil-rubbed bronze and brass {yes, they can be mixed}. So, we found a similarly shaped gooseneck style faucet {great for filling big pots}, but in a dark oil-rubbed bronze finish. It plays well with the backsplash’s black tiles and pops against the cream-colored sink.
Oil Rubbed Bronze Faucet : After
Isn’t it amazing how a single change makes the kitchen feel more cohesive? I find such joy in creating a home, watching it come together, piece by piece, over time.
Kitchen Sink Organization and Cleaning
Of course, any faucet… or any sink… or any kitchen is better when it can be cared for easily. Our kitchen sink {aka. the heart of “the heart of the home”} works hard every day, and it is set up for the job.
Corral Supplies
Corral the daily essentials, such as sponges, dishwashing liquid, and a surface cleaner near the sink. A cake pedestal holds a small collection of the products we use daily.
The green Scotch-Brite® Scrub Dots sponge is designed for heavy duty, baked-on, messes. The blue sponge is designed for every day, non-scratch, cleaning.
Pretty Packaging
Just because we’re talking cleaning supplies doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty. An antique brass soap dish holds sponges and a small canning jar contains powdered surface cleaner.
I pair the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Dots Sponge with a powdered cleaner to quickly wipe down the sink and faucet. It cleans without scratching and the Scrubbing Dots technology allows the sponge to rinse clean.
Close at Hand
For lesser-used or larger products, store them close at hand. In our under-sink cabinet, I keep dishwands in a large canning jar. Sponges are my daily go-to, but some meals require more muscle. When we’ve got pots, pans, and dishes to scrub, it’s easy to pull out the jar and set it on the back of the sink.
The Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Dots Dishwand is safe for dishes, countertops, and cooktops. Grab the Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Dots Dishwand when you need to tackle tough-to-clean pots and pans.
