7 Tiny Laundry Room Storage Ideas (that are cheap!)

Have a small laundry room? Try these inexpensive, small laundry room storage ideas! It’s easy to organize a small laundry room with clever laundry hacks and tips!

Have you been blessed with a small laundry room — a tiny laundry room, even? Our laundry room was a closet, in a small hallway. Now it’s a laundry “nook” because we removed the closet doors. So, it’s small… but with several smart laundry room storage ideas, it’s functional and well-organized!

How did we do it? Today, I’m sharing 7 ways to maximize the space in a tiny laundry room and get organized.

Small Laundry Room Storage

#1: Storage Above the Washer & Dryer

We were lucky, the previous owner had installed two cabinets above the washer and dryer. However, if there had not been cabinets in place, we would have installed shelves. Don’t let space above the washer and dryer go to waste.

You can build simple, cheap laundry room shelving from a sheet of plywood (check out this post about diy closet shelving for a tutorial).

#2: Storage Between the Washer & Dryer

Is there space between the washer and dryer? A slim laundry cart may fit perfectly between the two appliances. I use the laundry cart to hold:

  • dryer sheets,
  • mason jars filled with clothespins and safety pins,
  • extra bottles of laundry detergent,
  • extra containers of fabric softener and,
  • small cleaning tools.

#3: Laundry Storage on the Walls

We surrounded the laundry room (and mudroom) with wall hooks mounted to the board and batten wall treatment. The hooks hold mudroom items — like wet swim clothes and snowsuits — along with laundry hanging space.

We use the double wall hooks to hang clothes that are drying or already dry, and ready to go to the bedroom. One wall hook has a laundry bag where I stick dirty kitchen dishcloths throughout the week.

In addition to the hooks, on one wall there is a swing arm towel rack for drying delicates.

Tip: To save money, buy double wall hooks at Hobby Lobby when the hardware is 50% off — or buy hooks in bulk.

#4: Storage Below the Laundry Room Cabinets

Initially, we intended to add a shelf just above the washer and dryer and below the cabinetry. However, that idea lost out to a spot for clothes hangers. Simply attach a towel rack to the base of cabinetry or shelving for handy hanger storage.

#5: Organize the top of the Washer and Dryer

We keep everyday-use items, like detergent and mesh laundry bags, in a pretty basket on top of the dryer. This is also where I’ll toss an article of clothing that might need pre-treatment or special care.

Our washer and dryer are en route to the only bathroom on the main level of our home, so it’s out in the open. A basket for stray items helps keep the room looking nice.

#6: Storage inside Laundry Room Cabinets

We keep much more than just laundry supplies in this room. It acts as a utility room, storing necessities like cleaning products, light bulbs, and batteries.

The battery storage is one of my favorite things about this room (I’m weird… I know). There are two small dishes that hold AA and AAA, the most-used battery sizes. Behind the dishes are bulk storage of each size.  Nearby is a large bin (with a cute battery decal to label it #itsthesimplethings) to hold all other battery types. We’ve got a few giant batteries, like those for flashlights, stored in between.

Now, that I’ve talked 10 minutes about battery storage… you can see how we use the rest of that cabinet. I keep less-frequently used laundry items like bleach pens, stain stick, and drying tools on the second shelf. On the top shelf is my grandmother’s sewing box (love) with a few air freshener products and candles.

In the opposite cabinet are more cleaning supplies and light bulbs.

#7: Storage above Laundry Room Cabinets

Yes, I don’t let any spot go unused. We keep rarely-used, bulky items above the laundry room cabinets. I even “hide” them by leaning artwork against the boxes. Tricky, right?

Figuring out how to organize a small laundry room comes down to planning and creativity. Ask yourself:

  • What storage problems do I currently have?
  • Which items don’t have a home?
  • What doesn’t belong in this space?
  • What do we not need at all?

Then start solving those problems. Don’t just run to the store and buy a bunch of baskets (and that’s coming from a girl who can’t pass up a good basket!) Instead, make a plan for what will be stored where and how.

These are some great laundry room tips! I'll have to remember for the future. As of right now we don't even have a nook, our washer and dryer are in the garage. I agree that the vertical space is often under-utilize, so I love all the hooks and storage you put on the walls.
