Never Say Never | One Room Challenge

In this Post: Why I’ve never done the One Room Challenge… that is, until now… and what made me change my mind. Plus, the design plan for a modern bohemian nursery.

A good piece of advice is “never say never.” Those of us that have children, know that. All the things we said we’d never do…

Well, sometimes, you can apply that advice to decorating, too. Our styles change, our needs change, our budgets change. I’ve always said that I’d never do the One Room Challenge. And guess what? Never say never.

Why I've Never Participated in the One Room Challenge. Nursery Makeover (BEFORE)

So, what were my reasons for saying “No” to the One Room Challenge? Motivation. Pressure. And Money.

Motivation

Maybe I’m a decorating purist {is that a thing?}; but I want to have the right motivation to makeover a room. And a blog challenge — on its own — isn’t enough motivation.

One Room Challenge - BEFORE - Modern Bohemian Nursery Makeover

There is one room in our home that is still covered in wallpaper. That room is my daughter’s nursery. When we put our house on the market, we moved her out of the shared bedroom in order to better stage our home for selling.

I had no plans to redecorate. If you buy this house, you get to take the wallpaper down in this last room {7 other rooms has been enough for me…}. But, baby girl had other plans; and decided to rip a chunk of wallpaper off. So, now, I’m tackling wallpapered room #8.

Do you know how excited I am about renovating another room in a house that I don’t even want to own anymore? Here’s to hoping the One Room Challenge provides a bit of motivation.

Pressure

I don’t work well under pressure. Or, more accurately, I don’t decorate well under pressure. And that’s kind of the whole point of the One Room Challengedecorating.

In fact, I just wrote an entire post, only 4 weeks ago, about decorating slowly {you can read it here, and learn how to make leather drawer pulls while you’re at it}.

My daughter’s crib, when it was still in the Shared Bedroom, before we listed our home

Decorating slowly is more my style. I like to peruse flea markets and mull over decisions, and I’m content in the waiting. However, when selling a home, I don’t have the luxury of leaving projects halfway done, until my next bright idea strikes. This room needs to be back in sellable shape, ASAP. Since the One Room Challenge, only last 6 weeks, I’ll have a strict timeline.

Money

Have you seen some of these makeovers?! GORGEOUS. But, quick makeovers often mean more money spent. At least, that’s the way it tends to work in our home. Instead, when we take our time, our budget doesn’t take quite as big of a hit.

And, truthfully, that can’t change. I’m doing the One Room Challenge, but our budget is tight. We don’t have much money to spend on this project, and I don’t want to invest money in things that won’t be moving with us to our next home.

So, I guess you could say that “all the stars have aligned” for me to participate in the One Room Challenge this session. I need motivation. The pressure will keep me accountable to finish quickly. And I’m challenged to save money and stick to a budget. Even though I’ve never participated in the ORC, I’ve always enjoyed checking out the work of the participants and cheering on other bloggers in the process. Each week, I’ll include a link to everyone else’s progress, too — so you can find all of the makeover inspiration you want! As of now, over 140 people are already linked to the challenge. Modern Bohemian Nursery Mood Board

So, to the good stuff! What is the plan? A modern, bohemian-inspired, nursery filled with pinks and neutrals.

A mix of modern and bohemian style in this nursery mood board. One Room Challenge - PLAN - Modern Bohemian Nursery Makeover.

Pom-Pom Trim Curtains | Valspar Soulful Grey | Macrame Wall Hanging
Floral Crib Sheet | Dipped Seagrass Basket
Melon Glass Knobs | Modern Pink Crib

I’ve included links for the sources under the mood board, but we actually won’t be purchasing much. Our navy crib is getting a pink makeover, and I’m adding trim to basic white curtains. We already own a macrame wall hanging and large seagrass basket that are awaiting their designated spot.

On the shopping list is paint, knobs, and a new crib sheet; but that is pretty much it!

I love everything about this post! I love your ideas!! And I loooove that little girl! She seems very curious, just like mine. ;-) Isn't it amazing how our children can persuade us to be braver and dig deeper? Even if it's something as simple as riding a roller coaster, or remodeling a room that wan't planned. haha! I'm cheering you on Momma! xo

Your mood board is beautiful and I think it's great that you're working on a tight budget. That's the reality for most people so you will offer some needed inspiration. Good luck! (This is my first ORC too.)

That's kind of what I was thinking -- that's one of the great things about ORC, so many different budgets that you can find something with which you can relate.

You removed wallpaper in 7 rooms?!? You deserve some type of award for that! I'm so excited you're participating in the ORC. I'm excited to see what you do - loving the mood board!

Sounds like an awesome plan! I really should be doing ORC so that I can finally get the half bath I've been putting off for forever done....but I have so many other deadlines looming these days that I couldn't face another one.
