If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the Blogosphere and Pinterest – it’s this:
You don’t need to be an Artist, to create your own Art.
Poetic, right?
Springtime puts me in the mood to create. Who am I kidding? I’m always in the mood to be creative! Springtime, Summertime, all the year long.
Anywho, a quick way to exercise some of that springtime creativity, and spruce up some areas in, is with some simple DIY Art. Today I’ve got 4 great ways to create DIY Art for your home.

Idea #1: Add Glam to a Souvenir
Last summer we took a trip to New Orleans and visited Cafe Du Monde for their famous Beignets. It was just lovely sitting outside with coffee and sweets in the French Market district. We wanted to remember our trip so we brought home a greeting card as a little memento.
Supplies: white frame + greeting card + a plain white photo mat + Gold Rub-N-Buff
How to:
- Apply the Gold Rub-N-Buff to the white photo mat with a rag.
- Let dry.
- Place in frame to mat the greeting card.
Idea #2: Turn a Thrifted Canvas into Abstract Art
I have tons of acrylic paints on hand, and a good portion are blues. Since my recently finished entryway included lots of blues, I decided to make some simple abstract art to tie in the color.
Supplies: thrifted art on a canvas + a bunch of acrylic paint + a foam brush
How to:
- Start by painting a coat of white over the entire canvas to disguise the previous artwork.
- Apply “blobs” of paint randomly across the canvas.
- Use the foam brush to swirl the “blobs,” blending the colors as you go.
Idea #3: Draw a Simple Sketch
I’ve been slowly working on mysunroom, which is right off our deck. In order to inspire us to take advantage of the outdoors (& add a little humor); I sketched this quirky art.
Supplies: rustic frame + sketch paper + fancy pen
How to:
- Try out some doodles on sketch paper, until you draw one that you like.
- Trim the sketch paper to fit the frame.
- Slide your sketch into the frame and hang!
Idea #4: Paint Watercolor Art
One evening the little guy {all suited up in his painters smock} and I got to work on some Watercolor Art. I needed some practice to make his 2nd Birthday Banner, and he wanted to get in on the fun. This DIY Art Project is totally kid friendly.
Supplies: a simple white frame + sketch paper + a white crayon + watercolor paint
How to:
- Using the white crayon, write out a verse or quote onto the sketch paper.
- Dip a brush into the watercolors and paint across the page, over what you wrote with the crayon.
- Let dry.
- Trim the sketch paper to fit the frame.
- Slide your art into the frame and hang!
I hope these simple ideas help you decorate your walls, especially for all of us who aren’t “real” artists!
