How to Make a Basket Wreath for the Front Door

Bored with a basic wreath? This fall, make a basket wreath for the front door. A hanging door basket is an unexpected choice!

Ever want to mix up your seasonal decor? I do. It’s fun to throw in something unexpected and unique. This year, I’m swapping out a typical fall wreath with a basket wreath. Filled with green, white, and purple florals, a hanging basket for the front door complements our exterior perfectly.

How to Make a Basket Wreath

Supplies Needed

wicker hanging basket (similar)
greenery garland (ex: green babies breath or long-leaved eucalyptus)
leafy garland with wire stems (ex: desmodium or eucalyptus)
floral foam
fall floral picks (white pumpkin, purple pumpkin, burgundy boxwood, white sunflower, green sunflower)
wire snips (or scissors)
floral wire
leather cord

Instructions

First, place the greenery garland into the hanging basket as a base. I cut a green babies breath garland in half and wrapped it around the inside of the basket.

Next, using the wire snips, cut stems off the leafy garland. A eucalyptus or desmodium garland is a great choice, with large round leaves on wire stems.

Once cut, insert the wire stems into floral foam blocks

Place the floral foam into the hanging basket, atop the greenery garland. If needed, add a second foam block filled with leafy stems.

Now that the foam blocks are in place, insert the floral picks one at a time. I chose the following layout:

  • white pumpkin in far-left corner
  • burgundy boxwood in far-right corner
  • white sunflower in front of burgundy boxwood
  • purple pumpkin in front-center
  • green sunflower in back-center

Finally, tie a loop of leather cord to use as the wreath hanger.

Front Door Basket with Flowers

A floral-filled basket wreath is a welcome change from the standard fall wreath. A fresh color palette and original shape are unexpected and eye-catching.

The deep purples and fresh greens echo the color palette in our planters which are filled with ornamental cabbage and sweet potato vines.

Granted, purple and green may not immediately make you think “fall,” but I’m not one to get tied to traditional seasonal color palettes. In fact, one of my favorite fall decorations is the blue and white pumpkins that I made from ticking fabric.

Bored with a basic wreath? This fall, make a basket wreath for the front door. A hanging door basket is an unexpected choice!

Materials

Instructions

  1. Place the greenery garland into the hanging basket as a base.
  2. Use the wire snips to cut branches off the leafy garland.
  3. Insert the wire branches into floral foam.
  4. Place the floral foam block into the hanging basket, atop the greenery garland.
  5. Insert the fall floral picks one at a time until you are pleased with the arrangement.
  6. Tie a loop of leather cord as a hanger.

Notes

The leafy garland must have wire or stiff plastic stems in order to be inserted into the foam blocks. In contrast, a flimsy plastic stem will make it very difficult to insert into foam.

Terrific Idea. And beautiful! The pumpkins add a nice dimension. For spring (Easter/Derby/Mom's Day) I bet you've already created a front door hat!
