“I’m boooorrrreeed…,” says my child, in a very familiar and unpleasant whine.

Those words are like fingernails scraping across a chalkboard — but sometimes, it’s a fair complaint from a little one. It can get rough during the winter when we can’t spend entire days outside. I mean, cabin fever can get to all of us, right?

Well, this week, we tackled the “I’m bored” attitude, with a creative activity that challenged my kids’ analytical thinking — and got their little bodies moving. We made a giant floor maze in our breakfast nook, all with affordable supplies and snacks that you can grab in a quick trip to Walmart.

Step #2: Begin by making the outer square of the maze with washi tape. It is 3.5 FT x 3.5 FT, so make sure to have enough clear space on the floor. The template includes dimensions, in order to help tape out the maze correctly.

Have you ever used washi tape? I picked up several colors at Walmart in the craft section. Washi tape is removable and doesn’t leave any residue, so you don’t have to worry about damaging the floor.

Step #3: Next, tape the inside of the maze, beginning from one of the openings {start or finish}. Again, use the dimensions on the template as a guide. The maze doesn’t need to be perfect, so there is no need to stress over exact dimensions. The intent of the template is to provide a guide.

If you have older children, involve them in making the maze. My son helped measure the outside square and marked off each line “complete” as we worked on the inside of the maze.

It took approximately 2 and 1/3 rolls of 20 FT long washi tape to complete the maze.

Step #4: Once the maze is finished, bring it to life with small toys. We used a mixture of building blocks, wooden trees, plastic rocks, and road signs to create the feel of driving through town.

Step #5: Finally, give the kids some motivation to make it through the maze. I filled cupcake wrappers with Whole Grain Cheddar Goldfish® Crackers. It’s a smarter snack option, that my kids love.

Giant Floor Maze Activity

Kids can fight cabin fever with this engaging and active game. They drive toy trucks through the maze, picking up Goldfish® Crackers as they go.

“The Snack That Smiles Back®”

Movement, play and challenging activities engage the whole family. Cabin fever can take over sometimes, we get focused on boredom, and forget the power of a smile. Little moments, like seeing my son learn to measure out and tape his own maze, creates joy-filled family memories.

Get creative and brainstorm variations to this activity, too. For example, my kindergartener is learning addition, so I placed flash cards next to the Goldfish Crackers. In order for my son pick up a Goldfish Cracker for his truck, he has to answer the question correctly.
