Want to Attach a picture hanger to a metal or plastic frame? Learn this simple and easy tip for how to attach a hanger to a plastic frame today!
I’ve been making some progress in our dining room that I hope to share in the next week or so. In the meantime, I wanted to share a quick, simple tip for how to attach a hanger to a plastic frame. Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say – and this trick solved a problem in our dining room.
How to Attach a Hanger to a Plastic or Metal Frame
A while back I picked up two small gold frames at a yard sale. At the time, I didn’t pay any attention to the hanging hardware on the back of the frame. As it turns out, there was not any hardware and it was actually a plastic frame. Normally, with a wood frame, I’d just hammer in some new hardware.
Initially, I tried this mounting tape, which works great for some applications. I’ve used it many times for temporary things like hanging garland or a poster for parties. However — whether due to the weight of the frame, the material of the frame or maybe even the finish on the wall — it was not working for this application. Within a few days, the frame fell off the wall… luckily the glass didn’t break!
That is when it occurred to me that I should try a product which I’ve used many times before, called E-6000. It’s a heavy-duty glue that works on many different materials. (such as ceramics, metal, and clay)
How to Add a Hanger to a Plastic Frame
Supplies Needed:
- Plastic or Metal Picture Frame
- Sawtooth Hangers from a Picture Hanging Kit
- E-6000 Glue
Instructions:
1. Apply Glue
First, apply the glue to a sawtooth hanger from the picture hanging kit. Then, press the hardware onto the frame.
2. Let the Glue Dry
Once in place, allow the glue plenty of time to dry. I let these plastic frames dry 24 hours before hanging.
The Easy Way to Attach a Hanger to a Plastic Frame
Two steps. That’s it! Talk about a painless project!
I’m pleased with this easy solution and am glad to have it for other items we may want to display on our walls. For example, a souvenir or memento that isn’t “made for hanging” such as a metal bin shadow box.

Would a sawtooth glued to back of thin piece of wood work as well and would it hold up outside? We have letters to be hung on our vinyl siding over the hot tub in the back. I do not want to put holes in the siding. I already have vinyl hooks for the siding but need to attach a sawtooth on each letter which is a very thin wood to attach to the vinyl hook. I was hoping to glue the sawtooth to the back of each letter and attach to vinyl siding hook. I am concerned it will not hold up in our cold winter. Thanks .

If there is a thin piece of wood, I'd probably use small nails paired with glue. Since it is outdoors, that would provide extra support. Hope that helps!

Hello! I have been looking all over for a solution to this problem. Will the glue/sawtooth hanger work with a frame that is 2.2 pounds? I received 4 expensive metal framed frames for my wedding but unable to hang them. Hoping this helps!

For 2.2 lbs, my guess would be yes. However, you may want to do several sawtooth hangers (for example: 1 on each end) to distribute the weight across them.

You can get small hanging kits at any Lowes/Home Depot. I'm sure there are kits available at places like Wal-Mart and Target, as well. Here is an example on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/OOK-59204-Piece-Assorted-Picture/dp/B000CSI8IQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423504577&sr=8-2&keywords=frame+hanging+kit
