My daughter’s handmade wood dollhouse sits in the corner of her pink bedroom. The white paint and light blue trim ties in well with the decor in her sweet, little girl’s bedroom. But the inside hasn’t received any love, and it’s time to build some handmade dollhouse furniture.
Let’s start with the kitchen. It is the heart of the home, after all!
How to Make a DIY Dollhouse Kitchen
Before you begin this dollhouse kitchen, be sure to measure your dollhouse space and doll height to figure out the dimensions you’ll need for the cabinets and counters. Then, head to your local craft store and look for suitable boxes and wood supplies!
Supplies
- Small Wood Trays or Boxes
- Thin Balsa Wood Sheets/Planks
- Round Wood Dowel Rods
- Square Wood Dowel Rods
- Flat Wood Ovals
- Craft Paints (Cabinetry, Counter, Sink)
- Metallic Craft Paint
Tools
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue
- Miter Box
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Utility knife
Instructions
1. Create the Kitchen Counter Shape
First, use wood boxes or trays to create a counter shape. Using the hot glue gun to glue the wood boxes together.
Note: We used these same trays to make a dollhouse fireplace and Barbie bunk beds.
2. Paint the Kitchen Cabinets
Next, paint the cabinetry with the craft paint color of your choice. We chose a deep teal blue that coordinated with the dollhouse wallpaper.
3. Make the Countertop
Using the Ruler and utility knife, cut the thin balsa wood planks into a countertop shape. Then, paint the countertop color.
We chose gray counters to represent a stone countertop (a nod to our kitchen’s black countertops).
4. Cut and Assemble Cabinet Doors
Using your ruler and utility knife cut different size balsa wood planks into cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Glue them to the cabinets and paint them the same color as the cabinets.
5. Create and Attach the Hardware
Next, use the miter box to cut the round dowel rods into small cylinders for the cabinet door hardware. Paint them a metallic color and hot glue them to the cabinet doors.
6. Paint and Attach the Sink
Grab a flat wood oval and paint it a sink color. We chose white paint to represent a farmhouse-style sink. Then, glue it to the countertop.
7. Cut and Assemble the Faucet
Cut 2 square dowel rod pieces for the faucet’s rise and reach. Then cut 1 round dowel rod piece for the faucet spout. Paint the pieces in metallic color (we chose gold as a nod to our brass kitchen faucet) and assemble the faucet with glue. Once assembled, glue it to the countertop.
Similarly, cut 2 round dowel rod pieces for the hot and cold knobs, paint, and attach to the counter.
DIY Dollhouse Kitchen
Keep in mind that each craft store carries different unfinished wood supplies and the selection online can be spotty, at best. However, most craft stores do carry some variety of wood boxes, wood circles/ovals, dowel rods, etc.
Once you’ve finished the kitchen, use what you’ve learned from this tutorial to create all the rooms in the dollhouse. This is a great DIY project to do together with your kiddo. Let them pick colors and help you glue the pieces together.
