House Number Sign with Wood
You know when you find an item in a store… you love it… it’s on clearance… but you have absolutely no need for it. Bummer! That’s the way I felt about this acacia wood cutting board (or cheese board?).
I mean, I love a leaning stack of cutting boards in the kitchen… but our kitchen renovation is still far off and our counter space is limited. So, I can’t validate collecting extra cutting boards simply for looks. What to do?
Well, I came up with another reason to buy this beauty of a cutting board. In fact, it’s been on my mental to-do list since we moved in. When we first moved in, I removed an old address sign and hung a “temporary” chalkboard version. (I’m not sure that you can call it a “temporary” solution anymore – it’s been hanging for over 1.5 years…).
Instead, I envisioned a wooden house number sign to pull in the color of the loveseat’s bamboo frame. The stain on this acacia cutting board made it a perfect fit. In my shopping cart, it went…
How to Make a DIY House Number Sign
Well, enough chatter, let’s get down to the details! As I mentioned, it’s a quick and easy project. Start by gathering the supplies to make your own house address sign, and you’ll be able to complete the project in less than an hour.
Supplies Needed
- Wood Cutting Board or Cheese Board (rectangle, natural edge, round)

Instructions
- First, layout the house numbers on the board in order to account for correct spacing.
- Once the numbers are laid out, mark the screw holes with a pencil.

FAQs
Q: Will a wood house number sign last, if it is exposed to the elements?
A: It depends. Certain wood types are more durable outdoors, such as acacia and cedar. Even so, every 1-2 years you may need to reapply stain or sealant.
Q: How do you hang a house number sign on a brick exterior home?
A: There are a couple of ways to hang a sign on a brick exterior.
- drilled hole: Use a masonry bit and drill into the mortar. Insert an anchor and hang the house number sign with a screw.
- no-hole clip: Skip drilling a hole and attach a brick clip (or two), instead. Hang the house address sign with picture hanging wire.
Q: How do you hang a house number sign on vinyl siding?
A: I prefer not to drill into vinyl siding, if at all possible. In the event that the house number sign needs to be moved, the holes aren’t easy to fill inconspicuously (however – if you do have unwanted holes in siding – here are several tips for how to repair a hole in vinyl siding). There are a couple of ways to hang something on vinyl siding without drilling holes.
- no-hole hook: Attach a no-hole hook to the vinyl siding. This product will work best with traditional horizontal lap siding (siding such as vertical board and batten is not the ideal application for this product).
- adhesive hook: While adhesive hooks may need to be replaced periodically, they can be a suitable solution. Purchase outdoor, heavy-duty command hooks that are designed for the correct amount of weight. Double-up, or triple-up, on the hooks if the sign is over the max weight. Hang the house address sign with picture hanging wire.
