My vintage-loving heart couldn’t be more excited that my baby girl wanted to be Snow White for Halloween. Classic Disney?! Yes, please. It turned out just darling, and was quite a simple project. So, if you’re daughter loves this classic princess, put this DIY Snow White costume on your project list!

How to make a Snow White DIY costume

If you ask me, DIY costumes are where it’s at. Seriously. Like, I start asking my kids about their Halloween costume in early August (#noshame). Making costumes that are creative, unique, and make my kids’ eyes light up… it’s just the best for a crafty mom.

And, true to form, I always gravitate toward easy costumes – like my son’s no-sew ninja costume and our family Mouseketeer costumes. This Snow White costume is no exception, and while it does require a tiny bit of sewing, it’s totally beginner-friendly.

How to Make a Snow White Costume

1. Determine the Skirt Length

First, measure to determine the skirt length.

For my daughter’s costume, I wanted it to be a long and full skirt (like Snow White’s dress). Therefore, I measured from the length from her waist to ankles. If you want a tutu-style skirt, measure waist to mid-thigh.

2. Cut the Tulle into Strips

Once measured, cut the yellow tulle into strips twice the length of the measurement.

Why twice the length? Because the tulle will be tied at the mid-point of the strip, onto the waistband.

For example, if the waist to ankle measurement is 15″, cut 30″ strips of yellow tulle.

3. Measure and Cut the Waistband

Next, hold the red elastic crochet up to the child’s waist and determine the correct length. Then, cut it to size.

4. Sew the Waistband

Using red thread, sew the ends of the red elastic crochet together to make a waistband.

If you’re a beginner seamstress, no worries! This doesn’t have to be pretty, it just needs to be secure. The tulle will cover any less-than-perfect stitches.

5. Tie Tulle Strips onto the Waistband

Once the waistband is complete, slide strips of yellow tulle through the crocheted openings. Simply knot the tulle at its midpoint onto the elastic crocheted ribbon, so that it hangs down evenly from the waistband.

Continue tieing strips until the skirt is complete and as full as desired.

TIP: Have the child try on the skirt and walk around in order to determine whether the skirt needs more tulle strips.

6. Measure and Cut the Headband

Once the skirt is complete, make the headband. Hold the red elastic crochet up to the child’s head and determine the correct length. Then, cut it to size.

7. Sew the Headband

Using red thread, sew the ends of the red elastic crochet together to make a headband.

8. Make a Red Bow

Using a red satin ribbon, make a bow. If bows don’t come easy to you (they don’t to me!), watch a video tutorial to see the step-by-step process.

9. Attach the Bow to the Headband

Once the bow is complete, attach it to the headband. You can use thread or hot glue to attach it.

10. Measure and Cut a Wristband

Once the headband is complete, make the wristband. Hold the red elastic crochet up to the child’s wrist and determine the correct length. Then, cut it to size.

11. Sew the Wristband

Using red thread, sew the ends of the red elastic crochet together to make a wristband.

12. Attach the Apple to the Wristband

Finally, using red thread, sew the wristband to the top of the plush apple. This creates a poison apple wristlet and the final detail of the DIY Snow White costume.

Don’t want to damage your child’s play food… no worries! Once Halloween is over, simply snip the thread and toss the fabric apple back in your child’s play kitchen. After all, it’s not actually poison!
